Mordheim Update 7/31/14 - Zealots

I figured I'd better get in one more post on my most prolific month of blogging.  I only had about 15 minutes to paint, but I figured that was enough time to start painting the flesh on my zealots.  I haven't put paint to a miniature since finishing the DoA earlier this month.  It felt good to paint again.

Flesh is obviously not uniform and I decided to paint all the fleshes with different hues this time.  I'm also going to try a different style on these miniatures so these colors are for the basecoat.  I put out multiple colors on the palette.  The darkest brown was VMC Ger. Camo Black/Brown.  Then I put out a couple Citadel flesh tones; Ratskin Flesh and Elf Flesh.  I finished up the colors with some Bleached Bone.  I put one drop of thinning medium into each color and used a wet palette to keep them workable.  I also put some Reikland Flesh Shade on the pallet too.  I wanted to add a very slight reddish hue to one of the miniatures.

Messy palette

I used the other space on my palette to mix the colors into all different shades.  Both miniatures started with a base of GCB/B  that is where the similarities end.  Each subsequent layer was different for each miniature.  In the end they came out looking very similar but, oh well, I'm learning.  The guy on the left has the slightly reddish hue.

Zealots
The plan for these miniatures is to make them look extremely dirty and grungy.  Their back-story will explain their formal-ish attire (it isn't written all the way yet).  I plan to shade and highlight the skin after I finish all of the basecoats.

The month of August will bring with it a new project.  I decided I am going to build a multi-purpose gaming tabletop.  I'll be posting on its progress as well as continuing my warband project.  I need to touch up the DoA too as Zlurpee Bowl games brought of some "injuries" to the enthusiast.

Update 7/24/14 - Sculpting

I've tried my hand at sculpting.  I think I'm generally happy with the turnout.  I wanted to take pictures of my steps along the way but it would have taken me way too long.  I've watched a lot of videos, read a lot of blogs and sought the advice of hobbyist much more experienced than I.

Before I started I planned out my steps and set-up for what I wanted to try.  I went along doing and redoing the steps I picked and think I can cut the time it took me to do this one in half.

I'm going to do more post on sculpting as I go along and they will be much more thorough.

Here are some pics of my first sculpted cape and hood.

This model has a hat so I thought I make the hood as if it were down.  I know this doesn't look very good but I'll take it for a first try.  You can't get better if you don't try, right?  Well, here is try one.

Story Time - Mordheim - Daybreak

Daybreak

The night was ending.  A reddish glow began seeping into the room through small gaps in the boarded up windows.  I wiped the sleep from my eyes, this was the best sleep I had gotten in ages.  I sat up from my make shift cot in the corner to find the room empty of all other life.  I made my way to the door pulling it open revealing the hallway from the night before.

The morning glow illuminated featured I didn't notice the night past.  Multiple doors stood on either side of the hallway separated by spans of old wooden walls.  Some wall sections were adorned with once beautiful tapestries depicting the former glory of the city.  Why had the comet seemingly spared this building?

I was startled by a creaking door opening near the other end of the hall.  Brat Khresti appeared in the hallway and came toward me.

"Morning.  Come, there is much to do."
_____________________________________________________________________________

The streets of the city produced their all too familiar smells.  The moldy wood was only slightly covered by the ever-present odor of rotting fish.  Always the fish?!  The dust covered streets were devoid of life at this hour.  Soon, what was left of the people of this city would be venturing out.  The light of day brought with it some security, enough to try to go about with normal living.  The streets were slightly safer once the sun was up.  The sun keeps away the man sized vermin and the living dead that haunt this town at night.

The City of the Damned.  That's what the rest of the Empire calls us.  What else could describe all of the vile filth, evil, and greed that this wretched comet has caused us.  I don't subscribe to comet being a blessing.  I just want to find the Wyrd Stone to keep it out of the hands of those who would use it to destroy and enslave.  It holds no value to me outside of that.  Some say we can use the power of the stones to rid this once great city of all that plagues us.  But I think those people see it as a way to take power for themselves.  How many gold crowns does a rich man need?  Just one more.

Brat Khresti has been looking to the south.  What does he see? How long has he been staring?  Do I say anything?  My questions are all answered as he turns his gaze to me.

"Your training will have to wait."

"Training?"

"Keep the door closed." was his final order to me.  With that I closed the door.

Mordheim Update - 7/18/14

I was able to do some pinning and gluing to start the building process.  Below I'm posting some pictures of where they are at right now.  I wont be posting comparison shots just yet.  I would like to get them cloaked and based before I do the comparisons.  These are simply rough builds there is quite a lot to do before I can even wash them.

Witch Hunter Captain
The Captain needs his hammer connection strengthened, his neck gap filled, and some mold lines still need to be cleaned up.  Also I'm trying to figure out how to attach the crossbow to him.  Then of course the cape and hood.

Witch Hunter 1
Witch Hunter 1 may have his hip thingy removed.  His sword is from a Chaos Warrior that he found in the street,  that's why it is in such rough shape.

Witch Hunter 2
Witch Hunter 2 is not carrying an ax.  The blade has already been removed.  He needs some gap filling and his club hand connection needs to be strengthened.  I will be adding some green stuff to make his club more hefty.

Witch Hunter 3
Witch Hunter 3 will be getting his hat trimmed to make way for a hood.  His club will also get some green stuff heft added.  Some gaps need to be filled as well.  He needs some mold line clean-up as well.

Witch Hunter 1 was the only miniature that I didn't have to adjust his head.  I think these guys look dynamic enough for being odds-and-ends that were put together.  I started to assemble my Warrior Priest as well but haven't taken a picture of him yet.  More to come

Mordheim Update - 7/17/14

Witch Hunter:
I'll be using Empire bits.  Swords and clubs are from some Empire bits I have, too.  I'll also throw in some chaos bits as well.  These guys will hopefully have the hooded cloaks.  Here are some drawings of the witch hunters.  I think these sketches will help me.  Hopefully by Monday I'll have some photos to compare these to.

Mordheim Update - 7/16/14

Warrior Priest:
I discussed some of my ideas with one of the guys I will be playing this game with and he said the warrior priest is often well armored.  I thought about the pictures I had seen online and realized just how right he was.  Then I got an idea of using some parts I have already of how to make him look even better, thanks Randroid.  I am thinking of using a Blood Bowl human linemen torso (pink), flagellant legs (yellow), a hammer from a Chaos Warriors Box with a standard staff, a sword on his belt, shield on his back, and a books.  I'm not sure where to put the book.  The green on the photo is for a green stuff hood.  I may decide to have it against his back instead.

Warrior Priest Ideas

When I get the model built I'll take a comparison picture.  I'll take photos to show progression too.  Thanks for checking this out and if anyone has thoughts/criticisms please leave me a comment.

Mordheim Update - 7/15/14

I have began putting together my Witch Hunter Warband for Mordheim.  I'm using some bits I got off of Ebay to put together a warband.  I've drawn up some of rough sketches (I don't draw well but I can tell what I'm drawing) of what I would like to do with the heroes.

Witch Hunter Captain:
I will be using mostly pieces from a WFB Empire State Troop Swordsman.  I'll be adding a hammer from Knights of the White Wolf and a shield and crossbow from some Empire bits.  I would like to give all of my Heroes a hooded cloak.  The cloaks and hoods will probably be made with green-stuff or grey-stuff.  I may give my Captain a cloak from the White Wolves too.

Witch Hunter Captain Idea
When I get the model built I'll take a comparison picture.  Mind you, I started assembly before I decided to document this, so some pieces are already together.  I'll take photos to show progression too.  Thanks for checking this out and if anyone has thoughts/criticisms please leave me a comment.

Update 7/9/14 DoA

Tuesday night was spent playing an intense game of Monopoly with my seven year old daughter.  After she went to bed I helped my wife with some mailings for her at-home-business.  Then it was hobby time and I decided to make a light box to help with my photography.  I cut up a large box and added some tissue paper squares to disperse the light.  I then took some quick snaps with my cell phone and this is how they turned out.

I think this is a good start and I should be able to get a team photo up tomorrow.  Zlurpee Bowl X starts Saturday and I, like all those who are attending, am getting excited.  Xtreme does such a great job with the tournament and getting the tourney scene players pumped up for the event and that is where the Dwarfs of Anarchy can't wait to make their debut.

Update 7/7/14... Amost There

I am so close, so close to being done with my Dwarfs of Anarchy.  This has been an incredibly fun project.  My only wish is that I was a better painter/modeler to make this idea come alive.  I've done things to the best of my limited ability and because of that I'm proud of this team.  As I go on with the project I keep coming up with more ideas  for them.  Well, I've given them a good try and as soon as they're officially done I'll be on to my next project.

The entire team has been based and sealed with a gloss coat and as of now can be played during Zlurpee Bowl X.  Everything else I am doing is only to add little things to the team.  I just need to matte varnish (three of the team members were done post the below photo being taken) and they will be done.

As I said before they are playable now but... the carrier and the counters also can but don't need to be finished up.  As the team stands now there are 13 players, 1 apothecary, 5 sideline bikes, and matching dice ready-to-go.

I may add some wording to the base of the blueish green bike to show that it is representative of the club founders bike.  The apothecary may get some wording too.  He might be "Chucky," I still need to decide on that.  It would make sense to be Tara but I didn't have any female riders.

I took a snap shot Saturday night, this is not the first official team photo.  The first official team photo should be posted soon.  Here we are thus far...

I will be posting the first Story Time regarding this team shortly.  Until then.

Story Time - Dwarfs of Anarchy

The Dwarfs of Anarchy Motorcycle Club (DoA)

History - The club was formed in -1967 by Grimnir Turnisson and Piney Wingorstin, following their return from serving under King Gotrekin the War of Vengeance. The first charter was called "Rocks of the Old World", simply because they weren't settled in any one place. They cruised the World Edge Mountains as vagabonds. It wasn't until after Gemma Turnisson, Grimnir's wife, became pregnant with her first son, Jackson, that they decided to settle in Alarming, the town where Gemma grew up. At that point, Grimnir Turnisson thought Alarming was a little too cute for a charter name, so he kept the charter the Rocks of the Old World. That's when the DAMCROW handle was born. The first chapter was founded in Alarming and originally had only nine members, the other seven being Quartz Grazer, Thornas "Uncle Tom" Whitloc, Chico Villain, Lenknee "The Pimp" Janitor, Clay Marrow, Keil McGheer and Otto "L'il Killer" Morax. Six of these were war veterans. Turnisson was the President up until his death in -1941, when Clay Marrow took over. The club was originally formed as a form of social rebellion for dwarfs who simply wanted freedom and no longer wished to live by society's rules. They also tried to protect the dwarfs (and gold) of Alarming from outside gangs and warpstone dealers, rather than exploit them.
In -1891, the Skaven attempted to expand their warpstone operations into Zhufbar, leading to a bloody war with DAMCROW, who retaliated by defending the territory under their control. This war ran until -1889, when the Skaven finally backed down after taking heavy casualties

DAMCROW rules the town of Alarming with an iron fist. They protect the village from outside influences, but also use violence to keep things the way they like it.
Activities – Any organization needs gold to survive, the DoA are no exception. To keep up with their rebel lifestyle and to keep the brew flowing they decided to be weapon runners. They use their exceptional weapon making abilities to keep the Orcs of the East Bay area well armed and DAMCROW’s coffers full.
They also have a mutually beneficial arrangement with the hobgoblins of the East Gate helping them with guerrilla attacks against their chaos dwarf oppressors.
Alarming’s central location makes it a target of other gangs. The Norse try to get their racist agenda across and the Skaven want to get their warpstone closer to Brettonia and Norsca.

Story Time - Mordheim

Introduction:

Orden Molotka

I could hear the dirt crunch beneath my feet.  The air was heavy and damp from the approaching mist.  This is not a safe time of night to be out.  Is there ever a safe time to be out in Mordheim?  Every sound snaps my neck around and elicits a flinch.  I wouldn’t even be doing this if it weren’t for… whatever… I am.

A whole building is out of place here.  Is that it?  It is.  A large wooden door stands between me and the fulfillment of my mission on this night.   I can hear an almost imperceptible sound from inside and raise my hand to knock at the door.  Before my hand can reach its target a voice from the shadow speaks out a warning.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

I stop.  I turn my eyes and try to focus toward the direction of the sound.

“Good idea.”

“Who are you?”

“This isn’t the place to draw attention to you.”

 “I said, “Who are you?””

He started to stir.  I reached for my dagger.

“Woah, woah.  I don’t want trouble, guy.”

He showed himself out of the shadows.  A hunched old drunkard stumbled out a held himself up against the door.

“Step aside old man I need to get in there.”

“Do you know what you’re doing?  Where you’re heading?”

“Yes.  In there. Now, out of my way.”

The old man looked up.  Then he straightened.  The figure now looked strong, tall, imposing.  His voice strengthened.

“You should be careful how you speak to folks around here.  Now, do you know what you’re doing?”

“Yes.” I said trying to sound sure of myself and unafraid.  “Five generation of my family called this place home.  I’ve heard numerous tales of what once was here, the glory of this place.  I want to take that back from the cursed and the wielders of magic.  Not for my family, they are gone, but for this city.”

He removed his hood.  A slight grin appears on his face…

“Enter.”

The large door opened with a creak and led to a dark corridor.  The hall spilled into a small room that housed a long wooden table.  Carved into the center of the wood was a familiar symbol, the mark of Orden Molotka, the Order of the Hammer.  Twelve chairs surrounded the table; five each along the two long sides, one at the head, and one at the foot.  There was no other decoration or furniture in the room.  Two small candles created a dim glow.  The large figure that followed me from outside took his seat at the foot of the table leaving two side seats remaining.  He motioned toward the chairs and I took one.

I could feel multiple eyes on me.  The man at the head of the table spoke.

“Welcome, Brat Khresti told us to be expecting you.  I am Kihot.

The rest went around the table introducing themselves.

The Witch Hunters…

“Slesh”

“Chayst”

“Povahu”

The Zealots…

“Palomnyk”

“Vtrata”

The Flagellants…

“Fanatyk”

“Oderzymi”

“Synyak”

The Warrior Priest…

“I am Brat Khresti.  We welcome you here Dzheffri.”

“How do you know my name?”

“We knew you’d be coming.  Your arrival was foretold to us long ago.  The anger that fills you has sent you here.  We will teach you, train you, and mold you in the sposib molotka.  You shall become your destiny, Orden Molotka.”

Something New - Story Time

My history in this world of miniature hobby-ing is short and now I realize I don't just like the painting but the "fluff" too.  That being said I going to add that aspect to the blog too.  I will be posting some history, lead-up, and stories about my teams, war bands, and armies.  I'm still going to do painting stuff here as it has helped me in my learning process but I'm adding story times in here too.  Thanks to anyone who reads this blog and feel free to post any and all comments are welcome.  This stuff is fun and with the help of you out there I can become a better painter, hobbyist, player, writer, etc.
